To start training as a PGA Pro you need a 4 handicap so I had achieved my goal. I desperately wanted to play on the European Tour but at the time my game was not strong enough. I turned pro in 1994 and started my 3 year apprenticeship to become a qualified PGA Professional.
I was fortunate enough to do my training at Farnham GC under the expert guidance of Grahame Cowlishaw. He was a great mentor and one of the reasons that I wanted to turn pro. During that time I worked hard on my game knowing that when I qualified I wanted to pursue a career as a touring professional rather than a club professional.
After passing my qualifications in 1997 I started my quest for the European Tour.
I played full time for 2 years but nothing really sparked. I had a couple of victories and was shooting very consistent scores around par, I couldn't understand whyI was not shooting the 5, 6, 7 unders that the winners were shooting. My all round game was great, I could do it in practice just not in a tournament. I then decided to have a break and go back to teaching.
In 2000 I started to hear about golf psychology and how it was having a big impact on the Tour Pro's game. When Tiger Woods blasted onto the golf scene in 1997 all of a sudden the Pro's found themselves at a disadvantage. They had to somehow improve their performances just to keep up.
After reading a couple of books on the subject I decided to put it to the test and started to practice again for the 2001 season. My game was a little rusty compared to 2 years previous but all of a sudden my mind was clearer, I was not worrying about results as much and I shot the lowest tournament round of my career, a 5 under par 67.
Then it happened. WOW!
Records smashed as Cowle dismisses Open field
Wednesday 29th Aug 2001.
Steve Cowle lifted the Skandia Hampshire Open Championship to new heights yesterday at sunny Hockley, where he re-wrote the record books with two scintillating rounds of golf.
The 28-year-old Blacknest professional had never won a Hampshire PGA event when he stepped on to the first tee early yesterday morning.
By lunch, he had broken the course record by two shots with a scorching first round of 62, nine under par.
By tea, he had beaten the championship record out of sight.
The chasing pack, including six times champion Richard Bland, hoped Cowle would wilt in the afternoon sun.
But he remained on the boil, shooting a 65 for an astonishing 15 under-par aggregate for the 36-hole competition.
"I've never played golf like it in my life," beamed Cowle.
"I hit just about every fairway and green and holed a lot of putts."
Cowle didn't drop a shot until he three putted his 27th hole.
He took three again for bogey at the ninth - his second last hole - but finished in style at the tenth, where he holed an eight-footer for his 17th birdie of the day.
Nine of them came in his first round, five of them in his last six holes. Cowle's success rate on the greens was top class.
He needed just 26 putts to put the finishing touches to some unerringly accurate approach work.
Second time out, he recovered from a shaky tee shot to par his first hole and never seriously looked back.
He cruised through eight holes in four under, then recovered from his first bogey with four more birdies on the back nine for a 36-hole total of 127 - four better than Bland and Alresford assistant James Ablett.
On any other day, their 11-under-par efforts would have won with ease. Ablett's first round 65 included a hole in one at the 133-yard 12th hole, achieved with a nine iron, incredibly the fifth ace of the youngster's short career.
But no-one could touch Cowle, who feels so confident about his game right now that he plans to try for his European Tour card next month.
His playing partner, twice Hampshire Open champion Mark Desmond, said: "I've played in a lot of tournaments over the years, including European events, and that's the best 36 holes of golf I've ever seen. Fifteen under at any level is just incredible."
And that was the turning point, it had taken me 4 years to figure it out but I finally knew how to score and I haven't looked back since. Until that time my win tally was 2, now it is 50+.

I have been playing golf since the age of 10. I was fortunate to have parents that both play and they encouraged me every step of the way. I played all of my junior golf at Farnham Golf Club and by the age of 14 I had a single figure handicap.
After graduating college in 1992 I decided that I wanted to become a golf professional, my handicap at the time was 7. I played full time for a year entering every event that I could and by September 1993 I had reduced my handicap to 3.
